After our two days with our friends, it’s time for us as a family to spend some time at the sea on our own.

We’re all looking forward to 3 days in Lido di Dante – it’s a trip down memory lane: as a young family we came here a few times when the kids were all in their single digits and it was just perfect – kid-friendly Italian restaurants – pizza and pasta universally loved by our children, beach fronts with playgrounds and shallow water…and tons of other kids.

Our new vacation setup sees us parents getting up and leaving early with the TWIKE, driving to the sea slowly on single lane roads, visiting places like Verona and having some good food along the way. Our kids will get up much later and have some breakfast before driving direct with the car, carrying our luggage with them. They will arrive early, check-in and start exploring Lido di Dante until we get there. (we will probably meet them already having their first drinks at one of the many beach front bars)

For us, as always, just a few km into our drive, it is imperative to stop and get ourselves some coffee. The bar we stopped had an additional offering ready for us…we weren’t quite ready for it yet…

The Pianura is just … flat. And thus also very boring. We drive from roundabout to roundabout and from village to village until we get to Verona…a city of culture and architecture.

We’re not complaining. The food was great, the day’s temperature just perfect and our roads deserted. Perfect TWIKEing.

After another few hours and stops for coffee and a gelato we arrive in Lido Di Dante, meet up with our kids and start our relaxation.

Our three days go by in no time and it’s time to continue onwards to Terni.

A quick look at my tyres tell me that we’re going to make it back to Switzerland just fine.

The tyres are good for at least another 3000 km

As three days earlier, my wife and I leave early and are planning to drive along the sea as long as possible before heading over the Toscanese hills and eventually down to Terni in Umbria.

We enjoy the drive along the sea but the hills are our favourite – Italy at its best!

We knew that there was some bad weather pulling up from the northeast but were hoping we could make it without it catching up to us.

Good news: we made it to Terni without a drop of rain! Our friends – and kids – were waiting for us already and we started our week in Terni – full of invites to the many people and families we know. It’s going to be great. This is us enjoying Italy not as tourists but as extended family.
