TDI2019 Day 9 – Rasiglia

Welcome to a quick TDI2019 entry – a day-trip to Rasiglia.

Gabriella and I start early as the little village can get crowded very quickly. Rasiglia is an easy 70 km drive from Terni and a true gem. It is also a testament to the steadfastness of a village to survive and use modern technology to attract visitors to their unique feature: A stream flowing right though it, previously powering mills and other textile-related machinery.

More on that later.

But first, we enter the Valnerina, the valley of the Nera river. A very nice road winds along the narrow valley, crossing over the river Nera here and there.

With cool air and an early sun this drive turns out to be a perfect TWIKE trip!

As everywhere in Tuscany and Umbria, there is no shortage of small hill-top villages that all are begging for a visit. They usually have a quiet main square, one or two bars and restaurants and a church. A life-time task for anyone liking good, local food and talking to locals! (like me – have to find a way to make this pay!)

Eventually, we arrive in Rasiglia. Even on a normal mid-week day, marshals are directing traffic to the various parking lots further outside of the village. We with our TWIKE can park on a motorbike parking space just outside the main entrance to the village.

We enter the traffic-free village early enough to shoot some pictures without any people in them:

Many mills - lots of water

There is water everywhere – the picture does not capture the constant sound the water makes.

This video gives you a good idea what the village looks like:

There are plenty of museums which show the various artesan tasks that were powered by the water in the past.

After another smaller tour, we’re ready to return to Terni.

On the way back we take the motorway and enjoy the relatively good road surface. We’re invited to some friends this evening and have decided to drive there directly.

Marta’s family has a very nice and large estate above Terni with very nice views of the town itself and the surrounding hills and visible mountains further away.

We’ve been invited for Dinner…this doesn’t mean we can’t arrive early for some drinks on their patio, right? 😉

It’s been a very nice day and I can recommend visiting Rasiglia – a very nice destination for an one day trip.
