Our first drive-free day on our second yearly TWIKE-adventure. We open the window of our room to be greeted not only by a very typical Mediterranean view, but also by a brilliant day awaiting us.
Since last time I was in Brescia, I didn’t get to see to much of the city – this time I’m trying to catch up a little š
First, we head out to have a look at Brescia’s marble quarries – source of a very nice marble variant called Botticino. Many older buildings in Brescia are built from this stone.
Looking down from the hills we see the pianura – northern Italy’s flat expanse between the Swiss Alps and the Apenin. Technically a valley, it is one of the regions of Europe that sees the least wind and thus is – with 30+m people creating air emissions – one with the highest levels of air pollution…and it shows.
We go to meet Michele, a friend of our family. We’ve known each other for 25+ years and have kept contact since – As usual, we eat, chat and I get to learn more about Italy, Brescia and many other things, since he and his girlfriend both are teachers and he teaches, among other subjects, Italian history.
After a very tasty vegan lunch and some of my Italian coffee-based elixir – we’re ready for more exploring.
Michele proposed to go to the Mille Miglia museum, since Brescia is the start and end point of one of the worlds’ most prestigious classic car rallies – 1800km to Rome and back. As a classic car fan, I was easily convinced š
Classic car after classic car, all in pristine condition lined up to form a timeline with additional information such as important events that took place during the race.
A car fan Mecca is is – proof of this was Italy’s Mustang club arriving car by car and slowly filling the museum’s courtyard. (The museum is fully prepared for electric cars visiting in larger numbers… I spied around 8x64A triple-phase plugs dotted around the courtyard – any chance for a larger TWIKE meeting there soon?…we’ll see!)
Some of the more expensive cars were registered to Swiss owners – unsurprisingly…
After the museum, we headed to the city of Brescia to check out the castle. Towering above Brescia, it is a place where residents meet and have a good time. With the beautiful weather, the parks were bursting with families having a good time and young lovebirds gazing into each others eyes, lit by a warm mid-October sun.
Back in the city centre, we continue where I left off last year – walking around, learning about various buildings, their use in the past and today and architectural features.
Later that evening, back at the house, we had some very tasty food and stayed up much too long – yet again. Not complaining, though š
Tomorrow, we’ll be driving to Venice – my daughter is looking forward to this visit very much. Me too, given the weather-forecast of 100% cloud free sunny weather.
